Dialogues between designer and artisan
5 May 2016

The X+Q Art brand was founded by Chinese sculptors Xiang Jing and Gu Guanci in 2010. The two have recently collaborated with the German porcelain manufacturer, Meissen, to create a collection of hybrid figures that exhibit Chinese traits and dress, yet produced with pure Western technique. The unusual “genetic” combination catches one’s attention immediately. The figurines are dressed in brightly coloured red and blue Mao jackets, and their puffy cheeks resemble those of little elves. The little angels are not traditional, winged putti, but chubby Chinese men, seated with wings spread wide. Germany and Chiina combine to create a new peaceful breed of miniature.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
