Tartela, A Spanish-style Bakery

The Mad Giant Brewery is located in Johannesburg, inside an abandoned ex-elevator factory. Haldane Martin Studio maintained the industrial feel of the building, starting with the shed roof. The interior reflects the Mad Giant brand’s adventurous and free spirit, with open, flowing spaces that are perfect for an evening amongst old friends, or for making new ones. Mad Giant’s mascot, the giant yeti, is at the center of the space; the statue was made using laser-cut zinc.
Two beer-cap shaped, cement bars are directly under the monster, where taps serve rivers of ice-cold beer. The furnishings were specifically designed for the space, and include long tables and metal chairs for the inside, and mechanical-inspired pieces for the patio. Mad Giant isn’t only about good beer; inside, the Urbanologi restaurant serves Asian cuisine concentrating on umami tastes (the fifth Japanese flavour, that is neither salty, sweet, sour or acidic), all to be perfectly paired with a freshly pulled beer.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
