The Underground Beauty of Grillstock Bath
17 September 2015
27 October 2016
Cologne’s 2016 annual Furniture Fair was the perfect occasion for the launch of German designer Sebastian Herkner’s home collection for Ames sala. Herkner won the 2015 Elle EDIDA award. Ames’ creative director is Ana Maria Calderon Kaiser, Colombian born and residing in Germany. The project seeks to revitalize Colombian artisan processes through the contributions of international designers. After a trip to Colombia, where he came in contact with local practices and the surrounding nature, Sebastian Herkner’s new collection applies a multicultural approach to the designs.
The trip proved to be a precious source of inspiration. Herkner was greatly influenced by the archetypal shapes he observed in Bogotà’s Gold Museum. His collection includes carpets, blankets, pillows, vases, baskets and containers, and the pieces narrate not only Herkner’s unique creative expression, but a strong connection to Colombian culture, local tradition and the artisans who practice them.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
