Collection of great class in Konsolos
1 October 2015
14 January 2016
La Fondation Cartier in Paris is presenting an exhibition celebrating the artistic vitality of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on until January 10th. This is the first exploration of over a century of Congolese art, curated by André Magnin. The collection features paintings, photography, comics and music, all celebrating modern and contemporary artists (in no chronological order). The iconic photography tells the story of the “Sapeurs”, or African Dandies, both female and male, and highlights their original elegance and intentional, special beauty. The paintings range from archaic/naif animal portraits in polychrome to contemporary, brightly coloured, pop figures. What emerges is the expressive vigor of a young population that uses various art forms as a manifestation of popular narration.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
