Chinese design studio Pinwu has recently opened a design library in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province, where the studio is also based and gets its inspirations from. Titled ‘From Yuhang Rong Design Library’, it is an expansion of Pinwu’s design innovation of traditional materials in northern Zhejiang such as bamboo, paper, silk and porcelain, which the studio refers to project ‘Rong’. Designers are encouraged to explore modern approaches to traditional materials and collaborate with local craftsmen for ‘Rong’, which literally means fusion and melting in Chinese and has been exhibited in many cities in China as well as in Milan and Paris.
The newly-opened design library includes a material library with books donated from 100 designers, an exhibition space, a concept design shop, a tea house and a garden. Each month, the library will commission three guest designers to contribute to the study of Chinese traditional materials and craftsmanship. The guest designers will exhibit their works at the library at month end. And the library will choose the best one at the end of the year for the ‘From Yuhang Award’. The commission is open to designers around the world who can travel to Hangzhou and explore the traditional materials with a contemporary twist.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
