China: through the looking glass

In November 2014, Molteni had its headquarters at the manufacturing hub in Giussano renewed with Glass Cube. Israeli artist and designer Ron Gilad, who created numerous products for the company, was tasked with reinventing the existing architecture and transforming it into an exhibition space that represents the firm’s identity. The result is a space of 400 square meters, made of open space, glass and surprising installations. At the centre, a body of water reflects the sky. Gilad reinterprets the distinctive themes of the company: the materials, wood most of all, the collections, the industrial processing and crafts, observed in microscopic detail, as if by an entomologist. It is like a box without partitions, because the objects that occupy it also create the space.
The staging plays on surprise and the unexpected: a sofa that dives from the ceiling, a dresser divided into two revealing how it is made inside, the shelves designed by Gilad himself forming unusual geometric figures. The heart of the project is a Wunderkammer, where reality and fantasy are mixed using 3D technology in projections accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Fabrizio Campanelli and performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Regarding this project, Gilad emphasizes the freedom offered by Molteni to experiment and explore his world in an unorthodox way to continue to evolve the culture of design.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
