Katacomb is an underground dance club in Seoul. The alternative scene often focuses on gothic atmospheres, recalling funerary themes, but Katacomb does it in a lustrous way, without any element of the macabre.
Situated along Hong Dae, one of the city streets dedicated to entertainment, the club is in a basement which has been transformed into a veritable underground city by the designers of the Korean studio Betwin. The red brick walls recall the Christian catacombs of the Roman age, contrasting with some references to Gothic architecture, with chandeliers that give the space rhythm. The bar counter and dance floor is separated from the area with tables and sofas by a metallic curtain made of numerous small golden skulls that hang down from the ceiling. This unusual private room captures the light and reflects its colours, transforming the little skulls into glittering prisms. Because transgression doesn’t always mean vulgarity…

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
