A piece of local China Town in Kuala Lumpur has a new lot in life thanks to the welcoming Lantern Hotel. The site has been home to an emporio, demolished and then replaced with a multi-storied building. The building is very different from its surroundings, and has been remodeled and converted into a hotel by the ZLGDesign studio. The work was mainly concentrated on opening a vast, central space that favours the circulation of air and light and aesthetically redefining the facade.
The Lantern Hotel has become a landmark, thanks to its street front position, existing harmoniously with the local hustle and bustle that defines the neighborhood. It has been “dressed”in a brick, three-dimensional skin, only interrupted by the room’s shutters, handmade from locally recovered wood. The interior of the hotel hosts two separate souls, existing in harmony; the first is more traditional, represented by the uncovered brickwork, and the second, more contemporary, exhibited by the essential concrete walls. A perfect synthesis of style.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
