Located in Kiev, Ukraine is the original Cake Cafe. Designed by the architectural firm 2B.GROUP, the café serves excellent desserts in a casual and surprisingly fun ambience. On a floor made of handmade hexagonal tiles stands a finely carved bar counter, a series of wooden tables and chairs for every taste (stools, rocking chairs and cosy bergère) where you can sit for a break. Inevitably, the focus is drawn to the huge central sculpture, a fuchsia balloon dog inspired by Jeff Koons’ Neo-pop artwork. But, as stated by an inscription on the hound’s “B-side”: ONLY LOOKS LIKE A KOONS’ DOG BUT IT IS NOT. Blatant irony and fluorescent colours are the hallmark of The Cake Cafe and characterize also the irreverent monochromatic toilets. Small utilitarian pieces of jewellery of contemporary kitsch.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
