I have stolen the title from Nuccio Ordine’s recent work (Bompiani, Milano, 2016), which reevaluates the importance of time spent on learning instead of earning. The author notes, “The usefulness of useless knowledge contrasts radically with the dominant concept of earning, that in the name of economic interest, is progressively killing memories of the past, the humanities, classic languages, education, free research, imagination, art…”. Lest art, memory, imagination and curiousity die, I would like to present a series of superfluous objects belonging in the category of “good things in bad taste”, inviting you to embrace the useless, as suggested by Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano, “to make the best of everything”.
