Architecture in glass

The Friedman Benda New York Gallery recently inaugurated Excerpt, a solo exhibition dedicated to Humberto and Fernando Campana. After having explored thriving traces of nature, which has been their primary source of inspiration for many collections, they decided to dedicate this solo exhibition to Thonet, the historical Austrian brand that specializes bentwood furniture. They began with the original chair and armchair silhouettes, and using the same expertise as skilled weavers, created wicker puzzles out of the traditional method of weaving the backrests and seats.
The patterns resemble patchwork, and include backrests and seats, as well as buffet doors and shelf walls, giving the furniture collection an intensely lived-in feel. It seems as though these original creations have already lived a previous life, and have endured the test of time. Fernando and Humberto have once again offered us surprising reinventions thanks to their anthropological sensibilities, transmitting a tropical aura to the DNA of a European tradition without betraying it.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
