Vanitas in painting is a still life with elements alluding to the theme of the transience of life. The name comes from the biblical phrase “vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas” and serves as a warning against the ephemerality of existence. Skulls and skeletons are the figures par excellence of the classical vanitas. In this episode the title was chosen to refer to both figures typical of vanitas, and to underline especially the worldly vanities in the world of fashion. From the field of design we trespass into that of clothing and accessories, in the conviction that between the arts there is no separation and that jewellery, clothes and handbags may, in their own right, fall into the category of design objects and contagion is always stimulating and healthy. Those who design fashion feed on design, stealing ideas, patterns and moods of nature, architecture and design to support their creativity. Those who practice design, except for a few happy exceptions, still harbour suspicions about this art, considered frivolous and hardly respectful to the dictates of the Bauhaus. Accessories and clothes are considered, like the vanitas, fleeting and temporary. They pass through, but return in a kind of happy continuum to render more glamorous, with ephemeral notes, the durable and functional.
